Walmart Takes Aim at Amazon and Costco with New Membership Program - But Is It a Good Deal?

“Once a household has paid one company up front for the year, every other retailer has to win that customer back from a decision they already made.”

Jay Aldebert, speaking to MarketWatch

MarketWatch quotes Jay Aldebert, Chief Growth Officer at International Services Inc., on Walmart's new $120 bundle of Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus. He says the plan puts pressure on Costco and Amazon, and that a year paid up front can pull more of a household's shopping to Walmart. His math: for people already paying for both plans, $120 instead of $218 is a no-brainer. On its own, the gas discount needs 1,200 gallons to cover the fee, and the 2% Sam's Cash reward needs $6,000 of eligible spending. Bill Peters reports on the bundle and whether it is a good deal.

What does this mean for your business?

The coverage is about a retailer collecting a year of loyalty up front. For an owner, the next question is when your cash arrives compared with when your costs come due. Start with your own pricing and collection timing, not a retailer’s scale.
